The Depths Worm invading the surface.

First off a little summary about the worm. The Depths Worm is the newest cave exclusive monster that makes it appearance in both the first and second cave layers. It is a hostile creature and has a very interesting way of finding a new home( kudos to devtalk in worm.lua):

The worm should wander around looking for fights until it finds a "home".
A good home will look like a place with multiple other items that have the pickable
component so the worm can set up a lure nearby.

Once the worm has found a good home it will hang around that area and
feed off of the plants and creatures that are nearby.

If the player tries to interact with the worm's lure or
approaches the worm while it isn't in a lure state it will strike.

So pretty much it digs around an area, attacking anything it comes across untill it has found a home with pickables like grass and the like. It will then appear as a "mysterious plant" which you can pick, which pisses the worm off. Now, the worm itself is a relatively tough opponent(when reaching endgame everything get's easier), especially when encountered in a group. It drops some monster meat and a wormlight, which heals hunger and hp and decreases sanity a bit. Furthermore, you will emit light for a period of time, which saves you a light source untill the effect runs out.

Alright, to the point. The only cave creature that invades the surface world so far is the batilisk, and it only appears from the sinkholes. Now this is fine, but having only bats invade is a bit too little imo. The surface could use another cave invader, and with the introduction of the Depths Worm I'd say it fits the bill perfectly. It could reside in forests or grass biomes, or dig around freely in rocky biomes. Since there doesn't grow into in rocky biomes this would cause them to move around freely AND attack any creature in sight, as it will not be able to find a home in that biome.

Regardless of what biome it resides in, it could add the feeling of "if I open up a sinkhole the native creatures will invade the surface", something that I originally thought would happen not only with the bats. And it adds a twist to an existing/upcoming creature, sortha like Krampus and the Krampusnachts (damn you general DS audience y u no ready yet for it's awesomeness?!). And the surface world lacks creatures between a spider and Deerclops' level, if you know what I mean.

Where the worms will reside and what frequency it appears is up for discussion. :-) I'd say there could be a group of 2-5 worms anywhere in the world apart from your base and most visited places, so it's like the opposite of the Lureplant, and there can only exist one group of worms at a time.

Oh and as a reward, these variety of worms will also have the chance to drop high tier loot, like thulecite and gems from the caves, or any random resource like flint and rocks.

TL;DR of the suggestion, for people who swing like that( I could have just described the suggestion in two sentences, but alas I was in a typing mood :joyous: ):

- The Depths Worm will invade the surface once you open a sinkhole and enter a cave

- It will reside in any biome in a group of 2-5 worms, away from your base and most visited places

- Have a chance to drop high tier loot like thulecite and gems and common resources

Wait. I thought Lureplants only came once you opened the sinkhole.

Yes. More invasive species would be nice.

Lureplants don't actually, They just arrive if you hang out in a certain area for a good enough of time.

I agree with this. Kevin said caves should be cause changes to the world, and we only have a minor one. Remember when he mentioned something about spider nests mixing the two sets of spiders or something? I'd like that too.

agreed... it actually makes you feel worry for your characters life when winter is coming... its awesome

anyhow on the main topic:

yes definitely, although I can foresee an issue with worm base invaders, although that'd be fun in my opinion after day 100 hounds just suicide and worms don't set off the traps hounds are butchered by (I think) so it'd be an interesting challenge and quite a nice twist (as you put it)

I'm all for both the Krampusnacht being in vanilla and the worm invaders. They would provide more challenge to the surface world and shouldn't set off traps. Bats don't. ;)

Wonder if more people want this.. Also made a tweak of the suggestion: These surface invading worms have a chance to drop high tier and common resources, so they not only invade the surface but also bring some ruins stuff, potentially making thulecite renewable be it at the cost of killing tough Depth Worms for it.

The ruins' Depth Worms should have a chance to drop thulecite (shards) aswell imo...

At least his idea doesn't involve mandatory waves. It's like an actually hard Lureplant.

By non-mandatory, do you mean that they only come in regular waves after opening a sinkhole? Or is there some other way their population is controlled.

Think of the lureplant's behavior. One in a while to make your day horrible.

So when I'm holding space to harvest my grass, there will be a random lure there that I'll accidentally pick, unleashing this beast. I'm looking forward to that.
